I just found out a couple days ago that this year’s READERCON (a rather nice “literary” sf con held just outside Boston) will be skipping the Saturday night Kirk Polland Memorial Bad Prose Panel. For those of you not in the know about old Kirk, the panel is a contest where we read actual published bad sf prose, which stops mid-paragraph. The competing writers then read four or five different endings to that paragraph, one of which is the actual bad prose passage. The rest are made up by the participating writers. The audience has to guess which of the many endings is the REAL bad prose.
The audience usually guesses wrong.
And I usually co-host this thing, along with Eric Van, who is the guy who actually finds most of this “prose” in the first place. For the first time in like, forever, Eric can’t attend Readercon this year. So Kirk, alas, will be missing as well.
What am I going to do with my Saturday night?
